The Origin of Baccarat :: BaccaratGuidebook
How the game originated
Both the French and the Italians are claiming to be the original authors of the game baccarat. By some coincidence the term baccarat is found in both the languages with the same meaning which forms the basis of this contention. The Italians maintain that baccarat was invented by Felix Falguierein during the middle ages. They argue that this game was based on a type of an Etruscan ritual of nine gods and that it was played with a deck of Tarot cards.
There was a blonde Italian virgin girl who prayed to the nine gods on her tiptoes as she waited to throw a 9 sided die, so the story goes. The side of that die that would face up would determine the fate of the virgin girl. An 8 or a 9 would mean she becomes a priestess. A 6 or a seven would mean she is banned from all the religious activities while any number which is less than 6 would require her to drown in the sea.
For the French the game is believed to have been introduced in around 1490AD and the game was played by French noble families before it turned into a casino game.
